Super Koopas are shelless Koopa Troopas who wear Superman-like capes. Like Mario's cape, these capes grant Super Koopas the ability to fly. It would seem that, like Mario, they need to get a running start in order to take off. Once in the air, they can sustain flight by simply holding their bodies horizontal instead of needing to use the cape as a parachute to catch air. It is possible that a normal shelless Koopa is granted this ability by powering up with a feather, since some Super Koopas drop feathers when stomped.
There are three different varieties of Super Koopa: ones with yellow capes, ones with red capes, and ones with flashing capes. The red caped ones appear to be green shelless Koopas. They always appear at the top of the screen, swoop down, and then rise back up. The yellow caped ones are either red or blue shelless Koopas. They can either swoop down like the red caped variety, or they can start out on the ground and have to get a running start before taking flight. The ones with flashing capes always start on the ground. If Mario stomps them once, they will turn into a normal blue shelless Koopa and a cape Feather will appear. If Mario doesn't squish the shelless Koopa, he can leave the screen and it will turn back into a Super Koopa when he comes back, yielding another cape Feather. There is a generator version that will continually spawn red-caped Super Koopas, and Whistlin' Chuck can also summon a swarm of them.
Super Koopas are vulnerable to all of Mario's attacks, including Yoshi's sweet tooth.
Red-caped Super Koopas are sprite 71, yellow-caped swooping Super Koopas are sprite 72, and Super Koopas that start on the ground are sprite 73. (This sprite will have a yellow or flashing cape depending on its x position) The Super Koopa generator is generator D3.
Super Koopas' bodies use palette B or D, depending on the variety, and their cape uses palette A or C. Their graphics are in the plains sprite set. (SP4 = GFX09)
