The Spin Jump is an ability Mario has that was first introduced in Super Mario World. It allows him to stomp with the force of a Yoshi, causing him to destroy or bounce off of enemies that wouldn't allow such reactions when jumped on normally. Mario can perform a spin jump without the aid of any power-ups, though the spin jump can cause different reactions with different power-ups:

Super Mario:

Will break downwards through turn blocks.

Fire Mario:

Will cause Mario to shoot fireballs in midair (limit of two fireballs onscreen still applies).

Cape Mario:

Will cause Mario to endlessly cape spin until slightly after he starts to fall. If the button causing the spin jump is held, Mario will fall slowly and continue cape spinning until he touches the ground.

The spin jump also allows Mario to dismount Yoshi. A spin jump will bounce Mario slightly when killing an enemy that would take more than one normal jump to kill. It is also possible to make jumps fewer than 3 blocks high by using the spin jump technique.
