Item Box

The Item Box, also known as the Select Box, is a blue bordered box at the top of the screen, between the Bonus Star (A.K.A. Star Points) counter and the Time Limit. Whenever Mario gets a powerup, but already has one, the old powerup will be placed in the select box (the only exception to this is if Mario gets a Mushroom while he has a Fire Flower or Cape). The item in the box will get replaced once a new item, including a mushroom, is collected.

There are two ways to get an item out of the Item Box: One is to press Select (hence the name, Select Box), and the other is to take damage (only if you already have a powerup, though. Otherwise, you'll die). Then, the item will slowly fall down. The item will pass through ground, however, so you must collect it before it goes off the screen.
