The Goal Sphere, also known as the ? (Question Mark) Sphere, is an alternative goal point in Super Mario World. It acts just as a normal Goal Tape except Bonus Stars are not collectable from touching it and it cannot activate secret exits. It also plays a different ending jingle from the regular goal. It is most noted for being one of the rarest sprites in the game, only used in one level, Sunken Ghost Ship.

In hacks, if the goal sphere is placed on a vertical level Mario will freeze when he touches the goal sphere and the screen won't fade out. But if it's placed on a horizontal level, Mario will start moving right when he touches the goal sphere and the screen will fade out normally just like when a goal tape is crossed, however, there is a hex edit that can prevent that from happening.

Goal spheres are sprite 0x4A in Lunar Magic.

Trivia

  • The reason why the Sunken Ghost Ship used this sprite is because the Giant Gate and goal tape can only be used on screens 0 and 1 of a vertical level. The tape disappears on other screens. This still doesn't excuse the fact that a vast majority of vertical levels had Mario take a door or Warp Pipe out to a horizontal level with the gate and goal tape, instead of using this sprite.
  • The Goal Sphere will also activate an overworld event accociated to a level. This is another reason Nintendo used a Goal Sphere in the Sunken Ghost Ship, as they had no other way to activate the earthquake.
